Background of the Study
Bilingual curriculum integration involves embedding two languages into every aspect of instruction. In Nigerian secondary schools, this approach is critical for addressing the country’s linguistic diversity and promoting academic success. An integrated curriculum combines subjects taught in both indigenous languages and English, thereby fostering balanced bilingual proficiency (Chinwe, 2023). Successful integration not only enhances linguistic skills but also reinforces cultural identity and cognitive development. Despite its potential, implementation varies considerably due to differences in resource allocation, teacher training, and administrative support. Many schools struggle with aligning curricular content with the dual-language approach, which may result in suboptimal learning outcomes. This study evaluates the current state of bilingual curriculum integration, assessing its impact on student achievement, language proficiency, and overall educational quality. By comparing practices across different schools, the study aims to identify best practices and propose recommendations for standardizing bilingual curriculum integration (Ifeoma, 2024; Obi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although bilingual curriculum integration holds promise for enhancing language proficiency, many Nigerian secondary schools face significant challenges in its implementation. Inconsistencies in teacher training, curricular design, and resource distribution result in uneven bilingual outcomes among students (Chinwe, 2023). This disparity contributes to gaps in academic performance and compromises the effectiveness of bilingual education. The lack of standardized integration models further complicates the evaluation of curriculum effectiveness. Consequently, there is an urgent need to assess current practices and develop strategies that ensure equitable and effective bilingual instruction (Ifeoma, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the current state of bilingual curriculum integration.
To evaluate its impact on student academic performance and language proficiency.
To propose guidelines for effective curriculum integration.
Research Questions:
How is bilingual curriculum integration implemented in Nigerian secondary schools?
What are the challenges and successes associated with these practices?
What recommendations can improve bilingual curriculum outcomes?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the challenges and benefits of bilingual curriculum integration in Nigerian secondary schools. The findings will inform educators and policymakers on effective strategies to enhance bilingual instruction and improve academic outcomes (Chinwe, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to Nigerian secondary schools and does not cover primary or tertiary education.
Definitions of Terms:
Bilingual Curriculum Integration: The systematic incorporation of two languages in instructional practices.
Secondary Schools: Educational institutions for adolescents.
Educational Outcomes: Measures of academic performance and language proficiency.
